Patrick McCarthy was a past chairman and editorial director of W magazine and Women’s Wear Daily. He was born in 1957 in Dedham, Massachusetts.

He graduated from Stanford University’s journalism school in 1973 then began his career at Fairchild Publications at WWD in London. McCarthy spent his entire professional life with the company, seeing it through its first acquisition by Disney and then its 1999 sale to Condé Nast.
McCarthy in 2010 left Fairchild, then the holding company for WWD and W magazine while still under the umbrella of Condé Nast when he was chairman and editorial director of the group. He largely led W, which he’d overseen since its 1993 launch as a fashion glossy.
After a stint as Paris bureau chief for WWD, McCarthy served as its European director. He returned to New York upon being named editor of the newspaper.
When Fairchild retired in 1997, he selected McCarthy as his successor in the roles of chairman and editorial director.
